Mt Hope Fire Department History

In the fall of 1972, a group of over 100 citizens of the Mt. Hope community gathered together to show their need and support for fire protection.  The area was surrounded by Alamance, Southeast, Whitsett, and McLeansville Fire Departments, but fell well outside of the 4-mile allowable districts of each department.  With the help of the Guilford County Fire Marshall's Office, a 6 member Steering Committee was appointed by the community.  With their hard work the dream became a reality, and on December 27, 1972, the Mt. Hope Community Fire Department was incorporated.

While operating out of temporary quarters at Butch Manufacturing Company, a group of 45 Volunteers began a formal training program delivered by the Guilford County Fire Marshall's Office.  After the purchase of a 1950 Pumper and a 1954 Tanker, Fire Protection began for the Mt. Hope Community.  Construction of the original station began on land that was donated by Mr. Walt Thompson, owner of Butch Manufacturing.  The site was situated near the geographic center of the district, and the intersection where the station was to be built provided easy access to all areas of the district.  After much hard work and hundreds of hours of volunteer labor, the building was completed and formally dedicated in September, 1973.
