Mt. Hope Community Fire Department
Mt. Hope Community Fire Department is located in the southeastern portion of Guilford County, NC. The district encompasses over 32 square miles, and has an annual population of over 3,600 people. The area is predominantly rural, but includes ½ of the 1,700 acre Rock Creek Industrial Park. Our area of the park includes 8 manufacturing and/or distribution facilities ranging in size from 70,000 to 650.000 square feet. We also cover several residential developments, 2 of which have over 400 single family homes or townhomes each. Our district also includes Piedmont Dragway, which hosts races 3 times per week and has the potential to attract over 10,000 fans for larger sanctioned events.
Our district is comprised of a 5 road mile district with the exception of the Beaver Hills Subdivision. The majority of this subdivision was outside of the district, so we applied for a 6 road mile district to take in this area. After being rerated by NC Office of State Fire Marshall, our Insurance Rating is a Class 6,and Class 9-S for the 6 mile district.
Water supply consists of 25 Static Water Points (Dry Hydrants) located throughout the district to provide the needed 1.5 mile travel distance to a water source. The northeast section of the district (about 10%) which includes to Industrial Park and 2 large residential developments is covered by a Municipal Water System (Wet Hydrants).
Mt. Hope Community Fire Department is comprised of 54 firefighters and Junior Firefighters, a 9 member Board of Directors, 3 Fire Commissioners, and an 8 member Ladies Auxiliary. We currently work 4 firefighters per day to maintain our response levels during the day time hours. We also work 1 person per day on weekends. Along with the career staff, we currently have 3 resident firefighters to provide quicker response at night.
Regular training is held each Wednesday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. The regular training sessions are to keep current on skills, maintain certifications, stay up to date on new technologies, and 1 night each month is dedicated to EMT Continuing Education. In 2007, we completed a full Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification Class, with 12 members receiving completing certification, and 6 more completing the NFPA 1403 requirements.
Each year, the firefighters hold 2 fundraisers. On the fourth Saturday in September, we hold our Annual Fish Fry from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. On the fourth Saturday in January, we hold our Annual Brunswick Stew Sale from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The profits from these go into our Firefighter's Fund and is used to purchase equipment that was not budgeted for. Equipment that we have bought in the past includes our first Chief's Car, Hydraulic Rescue Tools, AED, and Thermal Imaging Cameras. We also use portions of this money to support the Guilford County Shiners' Burn Center Softball and Golf Tournaments.
